System Architecture
Because Walkabout is written in Progress and can be used in both GUI and Character modes, you have many options on how to deploy it. The central Progress database means that in all cases you can integrate security, job control, printer set up and so on. For example, users often run Walkabout from their own menus. |

Although there are a number of possible variations, the server only model is normally applied to character based applications or to Windows NT. The client/server model is normally used for GUI applications based on a UNIX server, or where the application is character based but users prefer to use GUI for reporting.
In client/server applications processing can be centralised in order to reduce network traffic, or distributed if you prefer.
Walkabout reports are held on the server so that all Walkabout users have access to them (subject to security). This makes it easy to deploy reports across your organisation for both management and operational reporting, and report sharing eliminates duplicated effort. Character and GUI versions can be deployed side-by side, with reports written on one being fully compatible with the other.
